Post subject: Apple Store - Regents Street, London

I bought my MacBook from the Apple store online and in the second week I noticed that it kept mooing incessantly. I called apple care and they told me to reset the power management unit, which I did however it did not make a difference.

Some posts on various forums suggested it was a problem that only affected MacBooks built before week 22. As mine was built in week 21 I decided to take it to the apple store in Regents Street to get it replaced. This is in fact what apple care told me to do when I spoke to them on the phone.

It was difficult to get an appointment at the "genius bar" and I had to wait until after midnight to make a booking on their website. This is when the system resets and their are actually a handful of places to be reserved!

When I explained the problem to the "genius" and also his manager I got a very quick response telling me that they had not seen this problem before. Apple care also told me this when I spoke to them on the phone. I find this very hard to believe due to all of the posts on the Internet about this problem.

It was very difficult to demonstrate the mooing noise in the store as the noise levels were very high. It did not help that the genius bar is actually right next to where they do the multimedia presentations! The "genius" told me that the fans turning on and off were normal behaviour, however when I played him the recording I had on my phone he told me it was actually a fault. He took it out the back to listen to the noise, but still he could not detect it.

They also said they would not be able to replace it even if they could identify it as a fault because I had bought it from the apple store online and that apparently is a completely different company! The level of customer support I received disappointed me.

After nearly an hour of arguing I gave up in the hope a firmware update would be released. I am still waiting...

Different store my arse!!! I've had two powerbooks fixed in the Apple store in Regent Street. One was a 12 inch which i bought in an Apple Reseller Store in Hong Kong and they still fixed it in Regent Street. Another was a 17inch which i bought off some guy on the internet in hong kong and when asked the guy where he bought it from he just mumbled something about getting it through relative's company. No reciepts or anything dodgy as hell, most likely stolen off a back of a lorry but who cares.... apple store still fixed it as they checked the serial number and it was made within the last year.

Then again i would be weary with the tech people there. twice they managed to crack my keys on the powerbook. so i went in a swapped my old ones for their display ones. so prefer hong kong tech support. same day turn around if they got the parts. and if they fuck it up they know u will rip them a new asshole when u find somethign wrong with your laptop.

anyway i think i should end my whining of differences between hk and uk service support as i could carry on all day.

he said they wouldn't "REPLACE" his macbook at the retail store, he didn't say they wouldn't "FIX".

and come on, it'd be a logistical nightmare for a company like apple to treat the inventory from their online store as the same as the inventory from the retail store. i used to work at blockbuster and had to deal with the same mindset from customers all the time. "whadyaa mean i can't return my video to the one down the street ... I THOUGHT you ALL were the SAME company"
